how to learn SEO step by Step online

Where is the best place to learn SEO online for beginners?

SEO is quite a complex subject and there are numerous SEO training courses available online – both free and paid SEO tutorials.

You can find an SEO tutorial or SEO training course for very specialist subjects too, such as WordPress SEO tutorials, local SEO tutorials, SEO copywriting, content marketing, link building, page optimisation and so on. There are many professional SEO tools available too that provide an extensive blog covering the SEO basics and some even provide free SEO courses.

There are also books available on Amazon on the subject of SEO (SEO for Dummies, SEO for Beginners and so on), however, by the time they are printed, they might contain chapters or sections that are no longer valid, such as screenshots from software they mention, e.g. Google Analytics.

The main subjects of SEO remain pretty stable though, so if you’re a book lover, then this might be a good way to get started.

Let’s talk about online beginner SEO courses.

Can you learn SEO online for free?

Absolutely! There are literally thousands, if not hundreds of thousands websites out there that offer online courses that teach you basic SEO skills for free. Simply do a search on Google or YouTube for an SEO course for beginners and you will find numerous results.

How to choose a good SEO Beginner course to optimise your own website?

This is where the difficulty begins. When you start with optimising your website, at one stage you will come across search engine optimisation and you realise this is yet another subject to tackle.

Big companies spend thousands, some tens of thousands of Pounds a month and some even have a whole department of people dedicated to Search Engine Optimisation.

Can you do SEO yourself with no budget?

You may wonder how you will have a chance to compete with a self-built website?

First of all, it’s absolutely possible to do the work yourself, but you need to be realistic about what you can achieve (check out my ongoing live case study on improving the SEO on this website).

If you’re selling shoes for example, and you want to rank for a keyword like “red shoes” – it’s unlikely that your website appears on page 1 in Google – even if you’ve spent a considerable amount of time optimising your website. Big companies like Amazon or big shoe retailers will maintain the top spot and a new small-ish website won’t have a chance to kick them off the top spot.

However, if you’re a local business in a certain area and you want to attract people to your website who are looking for a local business like yours – for example an artisan bakery in North London – you have every chance to achieve a page 1 position in a search engine.

Choosing a good SEO beginners course is the difficult part

The difficulty in choosing a good SEO beginner course is to know if the person offering the course is actually any good at it. It’s important to look at their credentials, any certificates and previous successes with other clients.

Due to the huge number of SEO related courses online it can be hard to figure out which one to choose. Most SEO courses deal with only one aspect of SEO, such as link building or on-page optimisation. They simply assume that the technical requirements are already in place. However, when you start out and need to optimise your own website, you need to find an SEO beginner course that explains all the different aspects of SEO in an easy-to-understand way.

A good SEO beginner course follows a roadmap which covers all the aspects of SEO and explains how to implement them.

Here are just a few examples of what you need to learn about:

  • Difference between black hat and white hat SEO
  • You need to learn about off page SEO
  • SEO content writing / SEO copy writing is hugely important
  • You need to learn about technical SEO
  • On-page vs off-page SEO
  • Link building
  • Page speed & load time
  • SSL
  • Keywords and keyword research
  • And much much more

Online SEO Tutorials

When you start looking for an SEO video tutorial or an SEO online roadmap, you don’t know about the different aspects of search engine optimisation yet. You could end up wasting a lot of time learning SEO in online video tutorials that cover very specific questions rather than providing you with a step-by-step SEO roadmap where you learn how to optimise your website in the right way.

Measure your SEO efforts & Trial and Error

From the start, install Google Analytics on your website and add your website to the Google Search Console. Take a note of your starting statistics (how many visitors per month and your average positions and impressions of your website) and then start improving your website.

When working on SEO, however, always keep your reader in mind. Your website needs to please your website visitors first and foremost, search engines second.

Search engines have become a lot more sophisticated and they can easily “see through” any suspicious activities that try to manipulate the search algorithm. Anything that feels suspicious, don’t do it.

Start working on your website as you learn. Implement any new SEO learnings straight away and take a not of them in your Google Analytics account (you can add an annotation for a certain date).

Some things you will do or change on your website might not have any impact on your search rankings. But it’s important to strive to improve your website on an ongoing basis.

Keep adding blog posts that your readers might find interesting, answer most common questions about your product or service on your website.

Join an online community or a group on social media and learn SEO together

There are many SEO learning communities available where small business owners gather and help each other. These communities usually have a learning aspect (like the SEO Club) where you will have access to online SEO tutorials to learn the basics of SEO.

In our SEO Club you can learn SEO Optimisation from the beginning. You don’t need any technical knowledge as everything is explained in simple terms. Follow the SEO Roadmap and learn SEO step by step in our weekly bitesized lessons.

Our club also have a lively Facebook group where business owners help each other and provide feedback.

SEO tutorials are provided in our online membership and are released once a week for a full year so you always have time to implement your newly learned SEO knowledge.

Check out the SEO Club and learn SEO step by step.

PS: The SEO Club is aimed at business owners who have built their own website. The platform is irrelevant – you may have built your website in WordPress, Wix, Squarespace or Shopify or others.
